Medicare Open Enrollment (OEP) vs Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) What's the difference?
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) - October 15 - December 7
Purpose: This is the primary time for all beneficiaries to review and switch their entire Medicare package for the upcoming year.
Allowed Changes: You can switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, change your Part D prescription drug plan, or drop private plans to return to Original Medicare.
Flexibility: You can change your mind and switch plans multiple times during this window; the last selection you make before December 7 will be your plan for January 1.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) - January 1 - March 31
Purpose: This is essentially a "trial period" for those already in a Medicare Advantage plan to fix a choice they are unhappy with.
Allowed Changes: You can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare (and join a Part D drug plan if you do).
Restrictions: You cannot use OEP to switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage for the first time. Additionally, insurers are prohibited from marketing or "prospecting" for new customers during this window.
Coverage Starts: 1st of the month after you apply
Have you received a notice that your plan has been discontinued?
If you recently received a notification that your Medicare plan is being discontinued for 2026, you're not alone. Some insurers are exiting unprofitable markets, leading to millions of Medicare Advantage enrollees losing their plans. Whether your plan is being discontinued or not, it’s important to take action quickly to ensure continuous coverage and get the best fit for your healthcare needs. The standard Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7, but if your plan is discontinued, you have until December 31 to select a new one. Just be aware that waiting past December 7 may leave you with a gap in coverage.
My Plan Isn’t Being Discontinued – Should I Still Act?
Even if your plan will continue next year, you might still want to consider making a change. Medicare plan benefits, premiums, and coverage (doctors, hospital and medications) can change annually leaving you potentially with high out of pocket expenses.
Whether it's finding better coverage, more competitive premiums, or improved benefits, it’s worth exploring your options. You can schedule a call or meeting with one of our licensed insurance agents to review your current plan and discuss potential alternatives.
